Warren Buffett Has a Lesson for AI Investors: Don’t Ignore History.

by admin August 6, 2026

Warren Buffett is widely regarded as one of the most successful investors in history, but even he has stumbled. In 1989, Buffett poured 358 million dollars into USAir, only to see that investment plummet to roughly 90 million dollars by 1994. He later described the move as a piece of foolishness, admitting it was a shame that he had participated in such a blunder. While an old airline failure might seem irrelevant to today’s high tech landscape, it offers a sobering warning for those currently pouring capital into artificial intelligence.

The central tension among AI investors is whether the technology is truly revolutionary enough to keep driving markets higher. However, the lesson from Buffett’s airline disaster is that a technology can change the world without actually making its financiers rich. Flight was arguably one of the most transformative inventions in human history, yet Buffett noted that the aviation industry as a whole lost money on a net basis since the days of the Wright brothers. Between massive overhead costs and the fact that flights essentially became commodities where every seat felt the same regardless of the carrier, many legendary airlines simply vanished or collapsed under their own weight.

There are worrying parallels between early aviation and current AI development. Building cutting edge models requires staggering amounts of capital, creating an environment where expenses are astronomical. Simultaneously, model quality across different frontier labs seems to be leveling out. Whenever one company makes a breakthrough, competitors match it within months, and open source alternatives often provide similar capabilities for free. This creates a race to the bottom where the cost of staying competitive outweighs the ability to maintain premium pricing.

This dynamic poses a specific risk to those betting heavily on model makers like OpenAI or Anthropic. While hardware giants like Nvidia are currently reaping massive profits, their success depends entirely on these model builders remaining solvent. If these companies become bottomless pits for capital without ever finding a sustainable path to profitability, they could fail and pull others down with them. For the average investor, this serves as a reminder to ignore flashy narratives and focus on boring financial facts. Just because AI will rewrite how society functions doesn’t automatically mean it will be a profitable place to park your money.
