Thousands of people under evacuation order from wildfires in Spokane, Wash.

Thousands of residents in Spokane are fleeing their homes as a trio of fast moving wildfires tear through eastern Washington. The situation reached a critical point over the weekend, with officials issuing Level 3 Go Now evacuation orders for several neighborhoods. The most severe threat comes from the Old Trails Fire, which ignited Saturday afternoon and scorched more than 3,500 acres by Sunday morning. Local witnesses described terrifying scenes, including walls of flame and cascades of black smoke sweeping toward residential areas and schools.

The scale of the disaster has prompted Governor Bob Ferguson to declare a statewide wildfire emergency. With thousands of structures potentially threatened, the Washington National Guard has been mobilized to support exhausted local first responders. To accommodate those forced from their houses, the city has converted its convention center into an emergency shelter. The crisis is compounded by widespread power outages affecting thousands of customers throughout Spokane County, leaving many families disconnected as they scramble to escape the encroaching flames.

State officials say these blazes are being fueled by a perfect storm of low humidity, powerful winds, and a record setting drought that has left the landscape like tinder. While crews battle the Old Trails, Fairview, and Autumn Lane fires in Spokane, dozens of other blazes are burning across the state. A strict statewide burn ban is now in effect to prevent any further sparks from igniting new disasters during what is already one of the busiest wildfire seasons on record since 2021.

Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove warned that firefighting resources are currently stretched thin across Washington as temperatures remain high and winds persist. He urged all citizens to exercise extreme caution with any potential ignition sources, noting that the combination of parched earth and erratic weather makes every single spark a potential catastrophe for communities across the region.
