Sam Altman reveals the investing advice billionaire Peter Thiel gave him that’s led to a $3.3 billion net worth

Sam Altman may be the face of OpenAI, but surprisingly, his massive personal fortune has nothing to do with the artificial intelligence giant. Despite leading one of the most valuable startups in history, Altman famously holds no equity in the company and lived for years on a modest salary of around 76,000 dollars. Instead, his estimated net worth of 3.3 billion dollars is the result of a disciplined, counterintuitive investing strategy he picked up from legendary venture capitalists Peter Thiel and Paul Graham.

In a recent appearance on the Invest Like the Best podcast, Altman explained that the secret to spectacular financial success is avoiding whatever seems popular at the moment. While following trends might lead to decent returns, Altman argues that truly outlier gains come from betting against the crowd. This philosophy of independence has guided him across a sprawling portfolio of approximately 400 companies, including early and pivotal stakes in platforms like Reddit, Airbnb, and Stripe. Perhaps his boldest bet is a 1.65 billion dollar investment in Helion, a nuclear fusion firm he began backing nearly a decade ago.

This mindset was forged during Altman’s rise through Silicon Valley, starting with his decision to drop out of Stanford to found Loopt. That venture brought him under the wing of Paul Graham, who later tapped Altman to lead Y Combinator. Through Graham, Altman learned the value of rigorous mentorship and tactical guidance. Later, when he launched his first venture fund called Hydrazine, he secured Peter Thiel as his largest outside investor. From Thiel, he adopted a brand of strategic contrarianism that emphasizes thinking for oneself rather than simply opposing others for its own sake.

Ultimately, Altman’s trajectory mirrors those of other titan investors like Warren Buffett and Peter Thiel themselves, all of whom preach the importance of emotional detachment and intellectual autonomy. Whether it is Buffett advising investors to remain calm while others panic or Thiel urging founders to build something entirely new rather than iterating on existing ideas, the theme remains consistent. For Altman, wealth wasn’t created by riding waves that everyone already saw coming but by spotting the tide before anyone else knew it existed.
